One of the great cultural treasures in our city, one that is “hidden” under the broader and louder marketing campaigns of other musical venues, are the weekly free recitals at the Curtis Institute of Music. Forget the word “student” when considering these performances. Although the musicians are studying at Curtis, they should be recognized as world class artists who have technique and mastery that exceeds many of the veteran professional musicians performing in orchestras and ensembles around the world. As an added bonus this time of year when the academic season draws to an end, there are more frequent performances including afternoons and evenings.
Each year, The Curtis Institute of Music rightfully boasts the Student Recital Series for any and all Philadelphians who search out or stumble upon this array of concerts hosted and performed by the brilliantly talented students of the Curtis Institute. This week holds no exception to the prestigious talents on display at Saint Mark’s Church as they perform classical pieces by a collection of composers such as Bach, Schumann, Mozart, and Paganini, expressed on a range of instruments from oboe to guitar.
This amazing and under-appreciated cultural opportunity is in full gear in Rittenhouse Square. Visit the Curtis Institute’s website and calendar of events for more details and enjoy the extraordinary talents of Philadelphia’s brilliantly accomplished musicians through May 13th.
