Ars Nova Workshop is a non-profit organization located in Philadelphia that is known for its presentation of new jazz and experimental music. Founded in 2000 under the directorship of Mark Christman, through grants and fundraising, Ars Nova brings world class musicians to Philadelphia at incredibly low costs to the public, often making for once in a lifetime events.

ANW has always been an important part of my Philadelphia experience. In venues all across the city I have witnessed some extraordinary performances by legendary musicians such as John Zorn, Barry Altshcul, Steve Coleman, Cecil Taylor and Tim Berne, as well as Philadelphia’s own Sun Ra Arkestra.  Last year I was invited to join the ANW Board of Directors for and look forward to supporting Mark and the organization in the years ahead.

The fall schedule features a Halloween show of the Sun Ra Arkestra at Johnny Brenda’s on October 31st. If you haven’t seen the Arkestra perform, you must. Lead by Marshall Allen since Sun Ra’s passing, the Arkestra remains one of the great cultural resources of our city. Also this fall, pianist Dave Burrell will perform alongside avant-garde drummer Andrew Cyrille for a night to remember at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, on October 10th. Other highlights include John Zorn’s organ trio on November 11th and Adam Rudolph’s GO on November 22nd. For the full calendar, click here.
